Arhinencephaly is a rare congenital disorder that affects the development of the brain. Derived from the Greek words "a" meaning absence, "rhin" meaning nose, and "encephaly" meaning brain, arhinencephaly literally means absence of the nose and brain.
This condition primarily manifests in the prenatal stage, where the forebrain fails to divide into two separate hemispheres, resulting in the absence or underdevelopment of the frontal lobes and olfactory bulbs. As a consequence, individuals with arhinencephaly often lack the ability to smell or have a severely impaired sense of smell. The condition can also lead to a variety of physical abnormalities, such as facial anomalies, cleft lip and palate, and holoprosencephaly (where the brain does not form distinct left and right hemispheres).
Arhinencephaly is typically diagnosed through medical imaging techniques like ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during pregnancy or shortly after birth. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this condition, and treatment options are limited to managing the associated symptoms and providing supportive care. Individuals with arhinencephaly often require specialized medical attention and may have complex physical and developmental needs.
Due to its rarity, there is limited research available on arhinencephaly, making it challenging to fully understand its causes and potential risk factors. Genetic factors, environmental influences, and disruptions in early embryonic development are suspected to contribute to the occurrence of arhinencephaly, although further studies are necessary to establish a clear etiology.
