Intefadeh is an Arabic word that translates to "uprising" or "revolt" in English. It is primarily used to refer to a period of political upheaval, typically characterized by popular protests, demonstrations, and resistance against an oppressive government, regime, or occupation.
The term gained widespread recognition and usage during the late 20th century in relation to two major uprisings in the Palestinian territories, namely the First and Second Intifadas. These Intifadas were marked by a surge of resistance, civil disobedience, and acts of violence against Israeli military forces and settlers. They originated as a response to the perceived Israeli occupation and control over Palestinian territories, and the frustration with the lack of progress in peace negotiations.
The First Intifada started in 1987 and lasted until the early 1990s, while the Second Intifada took place from late 2000 to 2005. Both Intifadas resulted in significant casualties and damage on both sides, including loss of lives, injuries, and social upheaval.
