MERS, an acronym for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, is a serious viral respiratory illness caused by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV). This virus was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and has since been reported in several countries in the Arabian Peninsula, as well as in other parts of the world.
The symptoms of MERS can range from mild to severe, including fever, cough, shortness of breath, and in some cases, respiratory failure.
