An osmometer is a scientific instrument designed to measure the osmotic concentration of a solution. The term osmotic concentration refers to the concentration of solute particles in a solution, which determines the solution's ability to draw water across a semi-permeable membrane.
The osmometer typically consists of a chamber to hold the solution under study and a semi-permeable membrane that allows water to pass through but not solute particles. The membrane may be made of cellulose or other materials with similar properties. A pressure sensor or manometer is used to measure the pressure exerted by the solution as water passes through the membrane.
To measure the osmotic concentration of a solution, the osmometer is calibrated with a known standard solution. The solution of interest is then placed in the chamber, and water flows through the semi-permeable membrane until the pressure on both sides of the membrane is equal. The pressure difference, measured by the pressure sensor, is directly proportional to the osmotic concentration of the solution.
