Sickle Cell Trait (SCT) is a genetic condition that is inherited when one parent passes down a single copy of the sickle cell gene to their child. This autosomal recessive disorder results from a mutation in the hemoglobin gene, specifically the HBB gene, which is responsible for producing the protein that carries oxygen in the red blood cells. Individuals with sickle cell trait have one normal hemoglobin gene (HbA) and one sickle hemoglobin gene (HbS).
The presence of sickle cell trait generally does not cause any symptoms or health problems, and individuals with SCT typically live normal, healthy lives.
