Tagliacotian rhinoplasty, also known as the Tagliacozzi or Italian method of rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to reconstruct or reshape the nose. Named after its inventor, Gaspare Tagliacozzi, an Italian surgeon from the 16th century, this technique involves the use of flaps of skin from the upper arm to reconstruct the nose.
In this procedure, the surgeon creates incisions in the desired areas of the nose and carefully lifts the skin of the nose off the underlying structures. The surgeon then harvests a flap of skin from the upper arm, which is still attached to its blood vessels, and places it onto the nose to replace or reshape the missing or damaged parts. This technique provides a more natural result as the flap contains the same type of tissue as the nose.
Once the flap is positioned, the surgeon carefully sutures the incisions, ensuring appropriate blood supply to the newly placed tissue. Over time, the blood vessels from the flap integrate with the surrounding tissues, allowing the reconstructed or reshaped nose to heal and function normally.
Tagliacotian rhinoplasty is considered a historical landmark in the development of plastic surgery techniques. Although it is no longer the standard procedure used in modern rhinoplasty, it represents an important step in the evolution of reconstructive surgery, particularly for nasal deformities caused by injuries, trauma, or congenital conditions.
