The condition is characterized by the presence of small colonies, known as nodules or concretions, that are adhered to the hair shaft. These nodules are caused by the colonization of gram-positive bacteria, particularly Corynebacterium species, which thrive on the fatty acids and oils found in sweat secretions.
Trichomycosis is typically asymptomatic, although it may cause some localized itching or discomfort in rare cases. It is more commonly found in individuals who produce excessive amounts of sweat or have poor hygiene practices, as the bacteria thrive in warm and moist environments.
