The term "vena cava superior" refers to a large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the upper body back to the heart. It is one of the two main veins responsible for returning blood to the heart, the other being the vena cava inferior.
The vena cava superior originates from the confluence of the right and left brachiocephalic veins, which themselves are formed by the union of the internal jugular veins and subclavian veins. It descends vertically along the right side of the body until it reaches the upper part of the heart, where it enters the right atrium.
Functionally, the vena cava superior acts as a major pathway for returning deoxygenated blood from the head, neck, arms, and chest region to the right side of the heart. After delivering this blood to the heart, it is then pumped into the pulmonary artery, which carries it to the lungs for oxygenation.
The vena cava superior is an essential component of the systemic circulation, along with the vena cava inferior. It works in conjunction with the heart and other blood vessels to ensure the continuous flow of blood throughout the body, allowing for the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to various organs and tissues.
